When we first estimated the costs of freight during last year's Kickstarter campaign, global freight prices were holding steady based on year-over-year estimates. Now with pandemic-related chaos, those costs have ballooned astronomically high, and this equates to about an extra $10 cost per backer. See our previous update to learn the details.
To correct this imbalance, we've created a special pack that will both elevate your Shivers experience AND raise some funding to help ensure our fledgling game company can weather the storm. In other news, we've received our first full set of pop-up room prototypes from the manufacturer!
They're looking really good! We've got some adjustments to do on our end around color correction, and dialing in a less-glossy paper finish, but we'd say they're about 90% of the way there.

The StoryCrafter's Pack has landed!
In our last update, we hinted that a creative solution was in the works to help us defray some of the insanely high freight prices you've all been hearing about. Well the wait is over: the StoryCrafter's Pack is nowavailable in BackerKit, just waiting for you to order!
We snuck in a new NPC ghost as well, inspired by which childhood classic?

The StoryCrafter's Pack add-on includes:
Alternate ghost artwork of ALL EIGHT playable Shivers characters (for when your character meets their untimely demise during an episode). Just swap their ghost version into the game's plastic standee bases to continue the adventure "from the great beyond".
A fold-out poster map of Fogmoor Cove, with numbered locations and legend, 18" by 11", worthy for framing or hanging, or plotting your next adventures beyond the Manor.
A completely blank pop-up room, for building your own DIY in-game creations! Budding tinkerers can use this room, complete with magnetic base and removable Story Card, to try out their own pop-up creations and incorporate them into new episodes!

Some great news! And some not-so-great news...

The great news: all Shivers printing files have been sent to the manufacturer!
Sixty-six PDFs in total have been uploaded to our manufacturer LongPack: that's everything from the pop-up rooms to game boxes, from standees to instruction manuals. Their team is currently working on preparing a set of pre-productionsamples for us to review and approve. Once we make any last modifications and give them our approval, The Shivers goes into full mass production!
I personally want to extend a huge congratulations to the entire Shivers team who has helped get to this important milestone. Bravo, team!

Here's the tougher part: pandemic-related impacts to our freight costs.
What do we mean by "freight"? It's putting stacks of The Shivers games into shipping containers, loading those containers onto huge ships, and sailing them across the world's oceans to distribution centers within your region. When our Kickstarter launched in July of last year, we were getting freight estimates of about $10,000, which was a cost we planned on covering entirely ourselves. Little did we know at the time that the pandemic would turn the world of global logistics and freight completely upside down.
We are now getting freight estimates of over $60,000, more than 6 times our original estimate, and prices may rise even higher when we actually ship in November/December. A single 40-foot container now costs $25,000 to ship. Had we used the magical crystal ball in the Laboratory to foresee this cost, this would have translated into an extra $10 added to your shipping estimate during our last year's Kickstarter campaign.
This is of course a massive hit to our fledgling company's finances, and frankly we're still reeling from the news. Incurring this cost will gravely impact every aspect of our business, from the number of games we order, to the amount we pay the manufacturer for each game, to the budget we have to generate new content and expansions (and we've been busy brewing up new ideas for both)!
Many other Kickstarters that launched around the same time as us are in the same boat, and they're pursuing various ways to deal with these astronomical cost increases. Here's a great article and video about the economic reasons behind this crisis.
But... we have a plan, and that plan includes you!
But instead of delaying our game shipment until freight costs come down, or just auto-charging all backers an extra $10 fee to make up for the high freight costs, we're looking at a more creative solution: offering an amazing new add-on to expand your adventures! We'll have more details very soon, just know that it will be spook-tacular!
